ProCoB project for the development of advanced coatings

applied to nuclear fusion

Flubetech S.L. is collaborating with the Center for Environmental, Energy and Technological Research (CIEMAT) and the European Spalation Source Bilbao (ESS Bilbao) on research and development for the ProCoB project (Development of Protective Coatings for Breeding Blankets in Fusion Reactors), CPP2024-011674. This project, focused on the design and validation of advanced multifunctional coatings for critical components of nuclear fusion reactors, addresses technological challenges associated with breeding blankets, essential components for tritium production in fusion reactors based on the WCLL (Water Cooled Lithium Lead) concept, where the PbLi eutectic circulates at high temperature. Specifically, the project centers on developing coatings capable of mitigating PbLi-induced corrosion, reducing tritium permeation, and acting as an electrical insulator, thus contributing to the system’s safety and efficiency.

ProCoB investigates carbide- and nitride-based coatings in single-layer and multi-layer configurations, as well as their application in electron beam welding (EBW) joints. The project includes evaluating these solutions under representative operating conditions through non-destructive testing and analyzing their behavior in materials subjected to mechanical stress. The project’s results will contribute to addressing key technological challenges related to Breeding Blankets, reinforcing the advancement of nuclear fusion and the industry’s position in cutting-edge energy technologies.
