ALUSIT: A Project for the Development of New Geometries, Finishes, and Coatings for Aluminum Threading
The project aimed at developing new threading tools for high-silicon aluminum alloys continues to progress.

The use of lightweight alloys is generally on the rise. Less weight means lower consumption, especially in electric vehicles. Consequently, their use is increasing. This entails changes in machining conditions and requirements, particularly in threading. These changes call for the development of new designs, coatings, and threading conditions.
Flubetech received a proposal from Nueva Herramienta de Corte (NECO-TIVOLY) to participate in ALUSIT, an Industrial Research project aimed at developing new geometries, finishes, and coatings to overcome the abrasion of cast aluminum alloys and, above all, the adhesion these alloys cause on threading tools.
The project began in 2021 with technological support from the RVCTI FUNDACIÓN TEKNIKER center and financial backing from the Basque Government’s HAZITEK program (ZL-2022/00541).
At the end of the second year, the project has developed a methodology for reconstructing taps in 3D and conducting simulations to approximate the behavior of taps during the cutting process. Promising new tribological coatings have also been developed using HiPIMS technology, aiming to enhance their application in threading tools.
