RESEARCH INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES IN EXPERIMENTAL PORTABLE ELECTROLYZER FOR PRODUCTION AND DEMONSTRATION OF GREEN HYDROGEN IN INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS

Project H2SKID ZE-2025/00028 proiektua

Eleven Basque companies will design and build the first portable containerized electrolyzer made in the Basque Country.

H2SKID project aims to develop an experimental 1.25 MW portable electrolyzer using AEM/PEM technology, which is conceived as an enabling solution for supplying green hydrogen to end-user industrial customers. Led by SARRALLE as the coordinating entity, the project also includes the participation of 10 leading companies from across the hydrogen value chain and is a unique initiative in the Basque Country, aimed at promoting industrial decarbonization.

Flubetech Coatings 2021, S.L. will develop coatings with different chemical compositions for bipolar plates and layer structures, seeking coatings with the most suitable properties required for the proper functioning of bipolar plates: good electrical and thermal conductivity, high corrosion resistance, low surface defect density, etc. The market for the solutions developed in this project extends to hydrogen consumers. This ensures the durability of the plates under extreme operating conditions, in both AEM and PEM systems, maximizing their long-term performance.

In the Basque Country, renewable hydrogen has become a key strategic driver for advancing the decarbonization of industry. In this context, one of the most promising paths is the gradual replacement of natural gas with green hydrogen in high-temperature processes, such as those in steelmaking, foundries, the paper industry, glassmaking, cement production, and petrochemicals. However, for this transition to be viable, a sufficient hydrogen supply is essential to conduct demonstration tests under real operating conditions. Currently, the lack of pipeline supply infrastructure from centralized green hydrogen production plants limits this type of testing in industrial facilities.

To address this need, H2SKID project’s objective is to design and build a portable, containerized electrolyzer that will serve as an enabling solution for supplying green hydrogen to end-user industrial consumers. This infrastructure will enable the development of long-term testing campaigns, essential for validating the operation of hydrogen-powered industrial equipment. Furthermore, the project is committed to advanced research into key electrolyzer technologies and their auxiliary systems, with the aim of strengthening a robust and competitive value chain in the field of hydrogen production.

The H2SKID electrolyzer is designed as a compact, modular, and “plug & play” experimental platform, integrated into two containerized modules: one dedicated to hydrogen production via electrolysis and the other to its compression and storage. The solution will be compatible with AEM and PEM electrolysis technologies, providing it with high technological flexibility. The system will also function as a test bench for validating critical components of both the electrolyzer and the compressor.

The H2SKID solution will be validated in a real industrial environment, specifically in the ladle preheating burner area and/or the tunnel furnace at ArcelorMittal Sestao, thus ensuring the practical relevance of the results obtained. At the end of the project, H2SKID will be consolidated as a leading scientific and technological tool to boost the development of the hydrogen sector in the Basque Country and accelerate the decarbonization of industry.

H2SKID Consortium
H2SKID is a multi-year strategic industrial research collaboration project (2025-2027) involving the following entities: Sarralle (coordinator), ABC Compresores, ArcelorMittal Sestao, Erreka, Flubetech, Mugape, Sener, Team Group Engineering, Torraval, Tubos Reunidos Group, and Zigor. It also has the support of ABC Tech, Tecnalia, and Zigor’s R&D unit as members of the Basque Science, Technology, and Innovation Network (RVCTI), and of the BASQUENERGY Cluster for communication and dissemination activities.
